Continuing education (CE) programs work best when they fit into the daily schedules and priorities of your organization’s members. That’s why flexibility matters.

By flexibility, we mean giving your members the power to choose how they engage. Some value the connection of an in-person session, while others prefer a more accessible online environment. So…why not combine both worlds?

Enter: hybrid learning. When you blend physical sessions with digital participation, your organization gives its members the convenience to show up and complete their courses on their own terms.

You may now be asking, “But how do you actually achieve such a thing?” We’ve got you covered; in this article, we’ll explore five strategies to help your organization implement hybrid learning effectively. Let’s get right to it!

Key Takeaways

Hybrid learning makes CE more flexible: Members can choose the format that works best for them, whether that means in person, online, live, or on demand.

Clear goals should guide the experience: Define what members need to learn, how they’ll participate, and how completion will be tracked.

Your platform matters: Look for tools that support livestreaming, recording, engagement features, CE tracking, certificates, and on-demand access.

Both audiences need to feel included: Online and in-person members should have equal opportunities to ask questions, contribute, and engage.

Training reduces friction: Staff, speakers, and facilitators should know how to manage both spaces (physical and virtual) and resolve basic technical issues.

Data helps improve future programs: Attendance, engagement, completion rates, and feedback can show you what’s working and what needs to change.

5 Best Practices for a Successful Hybrid Setup

To execute the right blended space, your organization needs a strategy that actively bridges the gap between the physical room and the digital screen, where both virtual and in-person members feel equally involved. Let’s explore:

1. Define the Learning Experience You Want to Create

Start by identifying your members’ learning objectives and the outcomes your organization wants to support. Then, think through how the experience should work for both in-person and online participants.

Ask questions like:

What should members know, do, or apply after the session?

Which parts of the experience need to happen live, and which can be completed on demand?

How will attendance, participation, and completion be tracked?

How will online and onsite members ask questions and contribute?

What accessibility needs should be considered?

Can this session be reused later as an on-demand course or member resource?

You may also benefit from asking members to review materials before a live session. This could include short videos, readings, case studies, or reflection questions.

By moving basic content review into the pre-session stage, the live portion can focus on higher-value activities like discussion, questions, case examples, group exercises, or practical application. This helps both online and in-person participants arrive with a shared context, making the session more interactive and useful. This strategy is called the flipped classroom approach.

Thinking through these details early helps create the right balance between online and onsite engagement. It also makes the learning experience more meaningful, accessible, and relevant for members.

2. Choose the Right Technology Platform

Naturally, your organization will lean on the power of your software to support the online component of the hybrid setup. Not only should it allow you to stream your session, but also support the full learning experience, from registration and participation to tracking and follow-up.

Look for solutions that support:

Livestreaming

Recording

Live chat

Polls

Q&A

Discussion forums

Quizzes

Breakout sessions

On-demand access (post-event)

Now, we know what you’re thinking: “Gosh, that’s a lot of functions to look for!”

Thankfully, many tools can integrate with each other. Or, for an even easier option, you can choose a highly capable all-in-one platform (like Vocalmeet’s!), which offers you everything you need, right from the start. With a solid collection of features at your fingertips, supporting remote and in-person attendees becomes simple.

Another important feature to look for is the ability to track each of your members’ CE. Your platform should be able to monitor online attendance, progress, assessment results, completion status, and certificate delivery. This keeps records clean for staff and gives members a smoother path from registration to completion.

Finally, think beyond the live session. A strong platform can help turn recordings, slides, and follow-up materials into reusable learning resources, extending the value of each event while reducing administrative work!

3. Create an Inclusive Experience for All Members

Once you’ve planned the learning experience and selected the right technology, it’s time to focus on how participation will be managed during the session. Here, inclusion needs to be built into the facilitation plan.

First, you want to set clear expectations for participation before the session begins. For instance, you can discuss with your members how questions will be handled, when they’ll be invited to contribute, and where they should share comments or responses.

It also helps to assign someone to monitor the virtual space. This person can flag online questions, watch for technical concerns, and help remote participants stay visible throughout the session.

Furthermore, facilitators should balance participation across both audiences. For example, they can alternate between onsite and online questions, or pause at set points to invite input from remote members.

Finally, don’t forget to make it interactive for everyone! According to Soydaş and Akyazi (2021), a high level of interaction makes it possible to hold attention, boost motivation, achieve high levels of satisfaction, and provide significant increases in learning performance.

4. Implement Proper Training and Support

A strong hybrid learning experience depends on more than just the platform. When your staff, facilitators, and speakers understand how to manage both the in-person and online elements of a session, you remove the added challenge of “first-time friction”!

This includes knowing how to engage the physical room, monitor the virtual chat, answer online questions, and address basic technical issues.

Once again, your technology platform will be one of your biggest assets here. Solutions with clear dashboards, simple navigation, and built-in webinar options make it easy for your members to access sessions without confusion! On the administrator side, being able to view registrants, send out last-minute email updates, and start your event straight from the platform lets you keep all your event workflows in one place.

Finally, be sure to run a few short technical rehearsals before your live events. Testing your audio, video, and screen-sharing tools gives your team a major confidence boost while reducing the risk of live disruptions.

5. Measure Success and Growth With Data and Feedback

The great thing about the hybrid setup is that your platform can gather member activity data, helping you turn it into insights. That includes engagement metrics, attendance data, completion rates, and post-session surveys to understand exactly how members participate, what’s working well, and where you can improve.

Kumar (2024) explains that one of the most significant benefits of analytics is that it removes speculation from critical (and even minor) decisions. Such data provides valuable insights that can help you assess where your organization currently stands, predict future outcomes, and pinpoint and mitigate risks.

The University of Pennsylvania (2022) further affirms that organizations can become more proactive in identifying opportunities, guided by data validity, rather than by simple intuition.

For example, you might discover that live sessions run too long, remote participants need more opportunities to ask questions, or certain topics perform better as on-demand resources.

Bonus recommendation: AI-powered reporting tools built into your platform can do the heavy lifting for you by helping you create detailed analyses that surface engagement trends and learning patterns that might otherwise go unnoticed. And, if your platform allows you to create and pull from custom data fields, it becomes even easier to refine and improve your programs over time!

Conclusion

As member expectations continue to evolve, flexibility also becomes a key part of a successful learning strategy. Organizations that invest in thoughtful hybrid learning experiences today will be better positioned to engage members, expand educational opportunities, and ultimately provide more value.

Start building your hybrid strategies now. By committing to a highly accessible space, you can build stronger loyalty and keep that engagement climbing for years to come!

Running online continuing education (CE) courses can be a significant investment for member-based organizations. These programs help strengthen member value, support professional growth, and open up a reliable stream of non-dues revenue.

But what if your members never really cross the finish line? When that happens, they may miss out on the professional development they signed up for, while your organization loses the engagement, completion data, and revenue potential its courses were designed to generate.

Dropout usually boils down to small (yet fixable!) friction points that quietly push members away. Fortunately, identifying them early can go a long way toward keeping them on track.

In this article, we’ll break down four common reasons members aren’t finishing courses and, more notably, what your organization can do to solve them. Let’s dive in!

Key Takeaways

Members can drop out of continuing education (CE) courses due to preventable friction points, not a lack of interest.

Cognitive overload can discourage participation. Breaking courses into smaller modules with clear progress tracking helps keep learners motivated.

Poor user experience/interface (UX/UI) can quietly drive members away. An intuitive learning management system (LMS) makes navigation easier and reduces frustration.

Automated reminders and notifications help members stay engaged and return to unfinished courses.

Interactive tools like discussion forums, polls, quizzes, and webinars encourage participation and create a stronger sense of accountability.

Identifying the Symptoms

Before getting into the reasons, it helps to know what dropout actually looks like. Here are a few signs that members may be struggling to complete their coursework:

Never starting a course after purchasing

Stalling on a specific module

Dropping off immediately after downloading resources

Failing to participate in forum discussions

Reaching the end but never hitting the 100% completion mark (e.g. earning but not downloading their certificate of completion!)

If any of these sound familiar, your course likely has friction points worth addressing! But don’t worry, a good Learning Management System (LMS) can help by tracking engagement data and showing you precisely where your members start to disengage.

Our recommendation: Start by comparing course enrollments to completions, then use your results to dig deeper into the courses with large completion gaps.

Reason 1: Cognitive Overwhelm

Raise your hand if you’ve ever felt intimidated to start a huge project or task. Yep, you’re not alone! When a course is presented as one large, unbroken block of content, it can feel all too daunting, which makes your members…well, not want to do the work.

This is the fundamental concept of cognitive overload: when the brain is given more information than it can comfortably process at one time (Koudsia & Kirchner, 2024). The result? Your members can feel stressed, frustrated, and less able to absorb anything.

That’s why the structure of your course matters just as much as the content itself. Not only should you think of the quality of your courses, but you should also consider how digestible they are. Let’s look at a few solutions:

Break Content Into Course Modules

Instead of lumping a course into a single large module, it may be better to break it into micro-lessons: small, manageable chunks where each lesson accounts for members’ attention spans.

One way to do this is to reduce lecture duration. This way, you make room for breathers: for each lesson completed, your members can take a well-deserved pause to prepare for the next hustle ahead.

Besides keeping your lectures short, keep them engaging, too! Videos, interactive elements, and real-world examples can go a long way in keeping members invested throughout each lesson.

Show Clear Progress Indicators

A progress indicator gives members a clear picture of how far they’ve come and how much remains. That visibility alone can be a quiet but powerful motivator, encouraging them to push through to the end rather than lose steam midway.

Implement Milestones and Checkpoints

You can also try incorporating small checkpoints along the way. These can take the form of recap sessions, short quizzes, or milestone markers to reinforce material before they move on, helping your members reset their focus and maintain confidence throughout the course.

Reason 2: UX/UI Friction

When was the last time you had to spend an extra five or ten minutes just to figure out how to navigate a platform? The thing is, User Experience/User Interface (UX/UI) can actually play a bigger role in whether a member completes a course than many organizations realize.

As Priyadarshini (2024) puts it, every pixel, every button, and every interaction within a digital interface holds the potential to captivate or alienate users, influencing their willingness to interact, explore, and return.

So, when the platform doesn’t behave as expected, your members can encounter friction that leads to procrastination and eventual drop-off. Confusing dashboards, hidden buttons, and too many steps to complete a simple action can quietly build frustration over time!

The Fix: Choose the Right Learning Platform

There’s usually no way around it than to just… choose the right platform or LMS. Look for one that offers a clean, intuitive interface that makes navigation straightforward for members from the moment they log in.

Beyond the member-facing experience, a good LMS should also simplify backend operations. Built-in analytics, reporting tools, and administrative features can give your team the visibility needed to track performance and make informed improvements over time.

Reason 3: No Timely Triggers

We all know that organization members are usually busy (I mean, really, who isn’t?). Between their personal and professional responsibilities, completing a course can slip through the cracks without the right nudges.

What’s more, when members go too long without returning to a course, they can forget what they’ve already covered and may even struggle to pick up where they left off. That loss of momentum is often what turns a temporary pause into an eventual dropout.

The Fix: Set Up Your Reminders

Smart, automated reminders can keep your members on track. This way, they’re in the loop on their coursework. Plus, progress-based notifications can also serve as encouragement, reminding them of how far they’ve already come.

Okay, but how do you set this up? Your learning platform should be able to do it for you! A good LMS can be configured to send notifications and reminders based on various triggers, such as:

“Your course will expire soon.”

“New resources available!”

“Don’t forget to download your certificate.”

Our recommendation: To avoid doing the manual, laborious work of nudging every single one of your members, consider automating these tasks. Automation eliminates the need to check on each member individually, saving your team valuable time and effort.

Reason 4: Lack of Engagement and Academic Interaction

Although online courses offer flexibility, that same freedom may sometimes work against members when there’s no sense of interaction or accountability.

Traditional classrooms thrive on in-person question-and-answer discussions and guided pacing. But for online professional development courses? Organizations usually have to rethink how they approach engagement.

Members tend to stay more driven when there’s a tangible sense of exchange and connection. In fact, Müller et al. (2021) found that during pandemic-related lockdowns, learners struggled to stay on course when key elements like social presence and peer interaction were no longer part of the experience.

The Fix: Create an Interactive, Gamified Learning Space

Interaction in an online setting may not be as hands-on as in-person classes, but that’s not to say you can’t execute it the right way in your virtual classroom! Here, you can let your LMS do the heavy lifting to create the right online space.

Some of the features a good LMS can provide are:

discussion boards (like instructor Q&A, support channels, or peer-to-peer engagement)

polls and knowledge checks

progress badges

virtual classrooms

Additionally, gamification (like badges and unlockable content) can transform passive participation into active engagement.

Our recommendation: If you want to take your course gamification game to the next level, use course authoring tools. From flip cards to interactive videos to image hot spots and more, your courses become far more engaging and memorable.

And, while you can use outside course authoring tools (by exporting them as a SCORM package and putting them on the platform as a module), it’s even easier when your platform also has its own built-in course authoring studio (like Vocalmeet’s!). This allows you to create, edit, sell, and launch engaging learning experiences all on the same system.

Conclusion

As an organization, you have more influence over the eLearning experience than you might realize. There will always be reasons members don’t finish, but when you set them up with the right structure, support, and tools from the start, completion becomes the natural outcome!

Celebrate their progress, guide them with clear indicators, and ensure your LMS works with your members (not against them!). With the right tweaks, you can help your members move confidently toward course completion, one meaningful step at a time.

When legal professionals have access to a full online catalogue, what types of continuing legal education (CLE) courses do they typically choose?

To explore this question, we conducted an internal review of 2025 registration data from a group of Vocalmeet’s legal clients. Our aim was simple: identify which broad CLE categories and course topics attracted the most registrations in this sample, then translate those observations into practical planning ideas for the year ahead.

Note: This overview is based on aggregated data from a limited set of Vocalmeet clients and is intended for informational purposes only; it should not be relied on as legal advice or as a definitive market study.

Our Method

With Vocalmeet’s platform, clients can choose the names and number of taxonomies applied to a product (including online courses). As a result, each organization structures its catalogue differently, creating tags and categories tailored to its needs.

When it comes to broad analysis, however, we would need a consistent way to compare continuing legal education (CLE) topics across multiple clients.

Here’s the method we used to standardize and analyze the data:

1. Collected 2025 enrollment data

We reviewed CLE enrollment data from participating Vocalmeet legal clients for the 2025 calendar year.

2. Standardized course categories

We created a shared list of 20 broad categories to use across all participating clients (for example, Administrative Law, Family Law, Practice Management).

This step allowed us to compare “like with like” across organizations that use their own internal taxonomies. After all, you can’t compare apples to oranges!

3. Mapped client catalogues to the shared taxonomy

We reviewed course titles and descriptions and assigned each course to one primary category from the standardized list.

When a course could fit into more than one category, we used the primary learning objective to determine its place.

4. Ranked categories by enrollment

We calculated the total number of completed registrations for each standardized category and ranked them from highest to lowest within this sample.

5. Identified high-enrollment course themes

Separately, we looked at the individual courses with the highest total registrations.

We noted the main topic and standardized category for each to pinpoint which themes appeared most often among high-enrollment offerings; this allowed us to determine whether a popular topic did not match a top 10 category.

Please note: As this was an internal analysis, the results provide only a snapshot of a subset of clients and do not reflect a comprehensive view of the legal profession as a whole.

What This Tells Us

1. Social security featured prominently

Five of our top ten courses focused on social security, from introduction to specifics. This suggests an interest in practical guides on this topic, whether in an introductory course or a deep dive into a specific section or issue.

This also highlights the value of practical, “how-to” CLE series that help practitioners navigate complex topics and regulatory frameworks. An added benefit of hosting themed CLEs is that they can be grouped into course bundles with a tidy discount to encourage members to buy.

2. Ethics, inclusion, and well-being were key considerations

At the category level, Professional Responsibility, Ethics & Professionalism, and Equity, Diversity & Well-Being all appeared in our top five.

For bar associations and regulators, this underscores the importance of keeping ethics, professionalism, bias, and wellness programming current and practical.

3. Practical technology and time-savers attracted steady interest

While many high-enrollment courses in our sample dealt with complex legal subjects, we also saw strong interest in practical “how-to” courses focused on:

Effective use of everyday tools (such as word-processing software)

Practice management efficiencies

Broader Technology & Innovation topics

For bar associations, these indicate a desire for CLE that helps members leverage their existing tools, improve their hard skills, and stay up to date with technology advancements and trends.

4. Administrative Law sat at the top of our list

In our dataset, Administrative Law ranked first among the standardized categories.

While this is just one sample, it’s broadly consistent with commentary highlighting in-demand fields. For instance, Donna Campbell of The National Jurist noted that labour and employment law were highly popular fields in 2025, while compliance and risk management were hard to ignore (2025).

5. Specialized topics still mattered

Only ten categories can occupy the “top 10,” but that doesn’t mean the rest are unimportant. Areas like Family Law, Criminal Law, ADR, Government Law, Elder Law, and Immigration Law continued to attract registrations.

These topics support areas of practice that are often described as “evergreen” (Campbell, 2025) and offer variety for members who have already met the core requirements. The key is balance: a strong CLE portfolio often mixes broad, high-demand topics with more specialized, high-value offerings.

Key Technology Takeaways

Regardless of your specific course mix, how you organize and analyze your online catalogue has a significant impact on how members find content and how your team learns from the data.

1. Use Clear, Consistent Categories

A helpful rule of thumb: avoid having more categories than you have courses in a given area.

Keep category labels clear, intuitive, and descriptive; the clearer your catalogue navigation, the easier it will be for members to find the courses that suit them best.

Standardize your internal taxonomy as much as possible (especially if you manage multiple programs, sections, or jurisdictions).

Review your categories periodically to remove duplicates and merge overlapping terms.

Best-practice guidance from content and taxonomy experts consistently emphasizes that well-designed taxonomies improve searchability, navigation, and reporting (Nav Thethi, 2024).

If your catalogue is cluttered with unclear or redundant categories, it becomes harder for both members and staff to see what’s working.

2. Tag Courses Thoughtfully

Categories are only one layer of wayfinding; tags help you add precision.

Apply consistent tags for more specific themes (such as social security, attorney wellness, bias and inclusion, or artificial intelligence (AI)) as needed.

You can then use these tags to cross-sell related programs and create niche store bundles.

This is also how you can reflect member search terms (e.g., by problem, audience, or scenario) without overexpanding your main category list.

3. Let Your LMS Reports Inform Your CLE Roadmap

You don’t need to wait for a yearly review to learn from your data. With a capable learning management system (LMS), you can:

Generate reports by category, course, date range, and more.

See which courses are gaining or losing traction.

Spot patterns (such as high registration but low completion rates, which may signal a need to revise areas of course content).

Because every member base is different, your own data should guide your decisions. You can reuse our method of analysis to test which topics, formats, and series work best for your audience.

4. Turn Insights Into Action

Once you’ve identified your own high-interest areas, you might consider:

Developing a short series around topics that attract sustained interest

Creating course bundles that connect related themes (like wellness, professionalism, practice management, or technology)

Featuring high-performing categories more prominently in your CLE storefront, newsletter, or social media

Some LMSs even allow you to promote “featured courses”; you can take advantage of this capability to further boost your most popular courses.

The goal here is to use the data you collect to make your upcoming catalogue more strategic, relevant, and easy to navigate.

Conclusion

While our top 10s of 2025 provide an interesting snapshot, the real story is written in your own data. Consider:

Which categories and topics attracted the most enrollments last year?

Which had the most completions?

Which formats (single course, series, bundle) performed best for your members?

By pairing these insights with clear categories, thoughtful tagging, and regular reporting, you can build a data-driven CLE roadmap that reflects the needs of your members.

So…what were your top 10 CLEs this year?

Updated June 5, 2026

Let’s face it: no matter who you are, your schedule is probably jam-packed and chaotic. And these days, time has become a more precious commodity than ever before. Attention spans are shrinking, and traditional training methods don’t always fit into the daily lives of professionals. This is where microlearning comes in: a modern learning strategy that delivers bite-sized, focused content in short, engaging formats.

If you’re hesitant about incorporating microlearning into your member-based organization’s strategy (or aren’t sure where to start!), now is the perfect time to explore how it can help your organization.

Microlearning can be a powerful benefit for enhancing member engagement while also supporting professional development. Its flexible and accessible nature serves up valuable knowledge in small, digestible lessons, keeping learners engaged and up to date without the information overload!

What is Microlearning?

Microlearning is a modern approach to lessons that breaks down educational content into small, easy-to-digest chunks, helping learners absorb information fast.

Unlike traditional training, which can take hours, microlearning is designed to be quick, engaging, and efficient, making it easier for learners to pick up (and retain!) knowledge in a snap. It’s ideal for busy professionals in need of skills here and now, which also means it pairs well with just-in-time learning.

According to the Association for Talent Development (n.d.), many people find microlearning valuable because it can be consumed quickly while learners are on the job, unlike longer in-person or virtual training that may require them to carve out time in their work schedules.

At its core, microlearning focuses on one clear learning objective at a time, helping learners grasp and apply information without feeling overloaded. It can stand alone as a quick lesson, act as a refresher for bigger programs, or provide specific education to tackle workplace challenges exactly when needed.

Why Your Organization Needs Microlearning

In a world where every minute counts (and information overload is a real issue!), it’s crucial for organizations to be flexible and creative in order to deliver educational content that works better.

Microlearning is one of the best solutions: its bite-sized, impactful lessons can fit perfectly into even the busiest of schedules! Here’s why microlearning is a total game-changer for your organization:

1. Enhanced Engagement

Long training sessions can be a drag, sometimes leading people to tune out and lose interest. Microlearning delivers short, visually appealing content that captures and retains learners’ attention.

According to the Digital Learning Institute (2014), there is a 50% higher engagement rate with microlearning, and learners achieve a higher retention rate. The precise learning chunks and wide variety of formats benefit both the learner’s experience and the amount of information they retain by reducing the likelihood of cognitive overload.

This is consistent with Balasundaram et al. (2024)’s research, which also demonstrated microlearning’s ability to reduce cognitive overload among learners, which, in turn, allows for enhanced learning and better knowledge retention.

That’s why content like videos, quizzes, and interactive (“gamified”) modules can help encourage members to actively participate in their learning, rather than just passively consume information!

When training is engaging, members are much more likely to stick with it, retain it, and later apply it to real-world situations.

2. Flexibility and Convenience

Microlearning is designed for today’s on-the-go professionals. It allows them to learn anytime, anywhere, on any device. Now, when members have fifteen minutes between meetings or are taking a breather from their current project, they have the ability to access quick, focused learning that doesn’t disrupt their workflow.

Simanjuntak and Haris (2023) explain that microlearning offers flexibility and convenience because the modules are typically focused on a specific learning objective and can be accessed on demand.

Microlearning means members don’t have to dedicate large blocks of time to learning. Instead, they go at their own pace, making it easier to balance professional development with other daily responsibilities.

3. Cost-Effectiveness

Developing and delivering traditional training programs can be expensive and time-consuming. Microlearning, however, is more affordable to create, update, and distribute–especially when using digital platforms! Since content is delivered in smaller chunks, organizations can continuously refresh training materials without investing heavily in large-scale course redesigns.

Lower costs mean more opportunities to provide ongoing education to members while maximizing the return on investment (ROI) of training initiatives.

4. Improved Knowledge Retention

According to Clearwater (2024), people tend to forget a large portion of new information within days or even hours unless they reinforce their learning. Microlearning helps combat this by using repetition and quick, focused lessons that are easier to remember. Interactive elements like quizzes and real-world scenarios also help learners retain knowledge, ensuring that they can apply what they’ve learned when it counts.

After all, better retention leads to stronger skill development, making learning more valuable and impactful for members!

5. Adaptability to Diverse Learning Styles

Every person has a unique learning style, including your members. Some members may prefer watching videos to understand difficult concepts, while others learn best by participating in more interactive activities, and others still excel through reading and reflection. Microlearning can come in a variety of formats (such as videos, infographics, quizzes, and podcasts), which ensures that you can create content that suits every member.

Level up your member-based organization’s learning and accessibility by tapping into each of these different preferences to make your education more inclusive and effective for everyone!

How Can Your Organization Implement Microlearning?

Now that you know the benefits of microlearning, the next question is: how do you make it work? While it’s not rocket science, success comes down to having a solid game plan. Here’s how to get started:

1. Assess Member Needs

Before developing microlearning content, you’ve got to put yourself in your members’ shoes. To pull this off, take the time to gather insights through various methods such as surveys, interviews, and an analysis of past training data to identify important areas like:

Skill gaps and professional development goals

Preferred learning formats

Helpful topics for their professions

By tying microlearning to the actual needs and experiences of your members, you ensure that your content is not just fun to engage with but also (and perhaps more importantly) practical and impactful.

2. Develop Quality Content

Microlearning is effective when it’s clear, concise, and engaging. Cover specific topics and focus on one learning objective per module. Consider implementing:

Short videos to explain concepts visually

Infographics for quick reference guides

Scenarios and case studies for real-world application

Quizzes and interactive elements to reinforce learning

Content should also be mobile-friendly so that members can access training anywhere–whether they’re in the office or on the go!

3. Leverage Technology

The right learning platform can make or break your microlearning strategy. When choosing a Learning Management System (LMS), look for something that:

Supports various microlearning formats (such as videos, PDFs, SCORM files, and images)

Can easily be used on mobile devices

Tracks learner progress and engagement

Allows for on-demand content delivery

Organizations can also use email campaigns, social media, or mobile apps to deliver this bite-sized learning directly to members, ensuring even easier access!

4. Gather Feedback and Improve

Continuous improvement is vital to ensuring that your members always have the highest quality learning experiences. To achieve this, all you have to do is ask and look! You can gather feedback through methods like:

Surveys and polls

Course analytics (such as completion rates or quiz scores)

Discussion forums or feedback sessions

Conclusion

Microlearning can be a powerful way to engage, educate, and empower your organization’s members. By offering short, flexible, and effective learning experiences, you make sure knowledge is easy to access, remember, and use. Whether you’re boosting professional growth, getting new members up to speed, or reinforcing important ideas, microlearning keeps you relevant in a world that’s constantly changing.

The end of the year is fast approaching, and for many association members working to complete their continuing education (CE) credits, that means crunch time. It’s a busy season for everyone, so your association’s ability to provide timely, effective reminders can make all the difference.

Regardless of when your association’s CE credits are due (not all organisations go by calendar year-end, after all!), it’s important to remind members early–and often!–about the approaching deadline.

By being proactive, creative, and supportive, you can ensure your members finish strong—and feel good about their membership! So, without further ado, let’s dive into ways you can nudge your members without being just another email they ignore.

1. Timing Is Everything

Let’s face it—no one likes a flood of last-minute reminders. Instead, start early and build momentum:

October: Lay the groundwork with friendly emails about deadlines and upcoming courses.

November: Shift into “helpful reminder mode” with updates on available programs and easy-to-access course links.

December: Finish strong with countdowns and “last chance” notices that add just the right touch of urgency.

A well-planned timeline ensures members feel guided—not nagged.

2. Blast Some Multi-Channel Communications

Emails are great, but they’re not the only way to reach your members. For best results, make sure to diversify your communication:

Text messages: If your organization offers text reminders, a quick “Only 2 weeks left to complete your CE credits!” can work wonders.

Social media: Post fun countdown images, share member success stories, or highlight key courses.

Automated alerts: If your learning management system (LMS) supports notifications, make sure to use them!

A multi-channel approach ensures your reminders actually get noticed–not buried in inboxes.

3. Tailor Your Messages

Generic reminders are, frankly, boring. Tailor your communications to show members you’ve got their back:

Make it personal: Use your LMS to generate individualized updates showing members what they’ve completed and what’s left.

Segment your messaging: Send an “Almost there!” to members close to completion, and a “Let’s get started!” to those lagging behind.

For example, automated progress dashboards and customizable notifications can help you turn a basic reminder into a personalized pat on the back!

4. Incentivize Early Action

Deadlines may get results, but it’s incentives that drive early action. Why not reward members who complete their CE credits before the rush?

Offer discounts on next year’s membership renewals.

Provide exclusive access to premium content, webinars, or other benefits.

Recognize achievers with a social media shout-out or a badge on their member profile.

It’s amazing what a little motivation can do to nudge people into action. Besides–everyone loves a nifty little reward!

5. Remove the Guesswork

Confusion about progress can be a major barrier to completing CE credits. Make it easy for members by:

Providing an intuitive member portal where they can track their progress and see what’s left.

Make progress easy to follow with a checklist of how many course activities a user has completed (“6/11 activities completed”).

Offering a filterable, searchable course catalog that makes finding the right course fast and simple.

With built-in reporting and real-time tracking, an advanced LMS can streamline the process for everyone involved.

6. Demonstrate Value

Sometimes, all members need is a reminder of why this matters. Highlight the benefits of completing CE credits:

Career development: Improved skills and credentials mean more opportunities.

Compliance made easy: Staying certified keeps them in good standing.

Professional growth: Continuing education isn’t just a box to check–it’s an investment in their future!

By framing CE completion as a win for them (and not just a requirement), you shift the conversation from obligation to opportunity.

7. Automate, Automate, Automate!

Why handle everything manually when your systems can do the heavy lifting? Automating reminders, progress reports, and course suggestions isn’t just efficient—it’s smart.

With tools that integrate learning management and member profiles, you can:

Customize and schedule reminders based on member activity.

Enable self-serve options so members can check their progress anytime.

Use advanced data insights to identify at-risk members and reach out proactively.

With a smart all-in-one platform, your team can focus more on strategy than administration.

You may also like: 11 Challenges (and Solutions!) of Digital Transformation

Conclusion

Helping members complete their CE credits doesn’t have to be a headache—for you or for them. With a little planning, some well-placed nudges, and a solid platform to make the process effortless, your association can turn a looming deadline into a story of success!

So go ahead, send those reminders. Your members will thank you for it come reporting season!

Every association strives to boost productivity and value, and one of the best ways to do that is by fully engaging your audience.

Engaged members are loyal, active, and more likely to buy courses, attend events, and promote your brand. So, when it comes to event attendance, engaging your audience can lead to a win-win: they attend, they participate, and they spread the word!

But how do you get that level of engagement? While there are many ways to engage an audience, a strong online presence is one of the most effective. Some might think technology detracts from in-person events, but it’s quite the opposite—it can actually enhance them!

With the right digital strategies, you can build a connected, engaged audience that’s excited to attend your physical events. Let’s explore how:

1. Engage Your Audience Through Interaction

One of the easiest ways to build engagement is by interacting with your audience. Social media provides the perfect platform for this, allowing you to connect with members directly: you can answer questions, solve problems, and build relationships easier than ever before.

The key here is authenticity—skip the corporate jargon and talk to your audience like real people. Join industry discussions, offer insights, and be approachable. An active, genuine online presence can make a big impact!

Beyond social media, consider offering online workshops, webinars, or an open forum where members can connect. The real power of these channels lies in being responsive—quickly address feedback, answer questions, and engage in dialogue. A responsive brand fosters loyalty, which makes users more likely to recommend your association and be more interested in your future events.

After all, high engagement levels make your association’s in-person events feel like a natural extension of your association’s virtual space!

2. Highlight Your Core Values

People are more likely to engage with associations they understand and relate to. Make sure your core values are front and center in everything you do. Be bold in sharing your mission and your stance on important issues in your industry. This doesn’t mean diving into politics, but it does mean consistently aligning your messaging with your values. Authenticity, again, is key here—modern audiences can spot a generic sales pitch a mile away, and they’re drawn to brands that feel genuine and personal.

One way to achieve this is by partnering with influencers or sponsors who share your values. When people see their beliefs reflected in your association, they’re more likely to become loyal participants in your events.

3. Enhance Your Purpose

To keep your audience engaged, offer more than just a product or event—become a hub of valuable information and resources. This could mean providing access to industry news, offering online training or workshops, or creating a space for networking and discussion. The more value you offer, the more invested your audience becomes in your organization.

Then, at your in-person events, make sure to leverage these connections.

Use your partnerships to create unique experiences (such as exclusive trials or presentations) that make your events stand out. When people feel like they’re part of something bigger, they’re more likely to show up and be involved.

4. Give a Behind-the-Scenes Look with Live Streaming

Want to give your audience a taste of your event before they even attend? Live streaming can do just that!

Show off your event in real-time, allowing viewers to experience it virtually and get a sense of what to expect if they attend in person next time. Live streams can also build anticipation–especially if you engage with your online audience during the event.

Don’t stop at just your events, though! You can use live streams to host interviews, discussions, or behind-the-scenes tours. Give your audience an inside look at your organization and the people behind it. These personal touches help build a connection and keep your association top of mind when it’s time to buy tickets to your next event.

5. Leverage Live Engagement Marketing (LEM)

Live Engagement Marketing (LEM) uses technology to create an interactive experience at in-person events. Whether it’s a digital concierge app, a networking platform, or gamified activities, these tools keep attendees engaged and connected. They also provide valuable data on your audience’s behavior and preferences, helping you tailor future events to their needs.

With tools like Near-Field Communication (NFC) devices, attendees can seamlessly interact with event booths and workshops, while you gain insights into their interests. This data can help you improve targeted marketing, advertising, and sponsorships–all of which boost attendance at future events!

Final Thoughts

By integrating these online strategies, you can turn digital engagement into real-world success. From interacting with your audience to live streaming events and using cutting-edge tech, these tactics not only build loyalty but also drive in-person attendance. Embrace the digital tools at your disposal, and watch your events thrive!

The live stream industry is booming all around the world. In 2017, Facebook’s head of video, Fidji Simo, reported that 20% of all Facebook videos were broadcast live, and watch times had grown four times in the course of just one year. Over time, the live industry is projected to be valued over $70 billion. For obvious reasons, organizations everywhere are increasing their investments in live streaming and discovering new ways to incorporate it.

There are a variety of ways live streams can help your association, but increasing the reach and accessibility of your events is one of the best and biggest. In fact, member-based organizations can expand their events in many ways through live streams! In today’s article, we’re going to be highlighting and discussing the major ways that organizations can transform their events through the art of live streaming:

1. Combat Attendance Caps

Since live streams come with a cost, some event planners may question whether it makes sense for their association. The truth is, there is no minimum organization size or attendance number to which live streams are limited! In reality, while bigger events may bring in far larger live stream viewership numbers, smaller associations may actually require live streams more in order to appease their audience.

With live streams, event attendance is no longer confined to venue capacity. Organizations don’t have to upgrade their venue size to accommodate unsecured attendees. If the in-person event sells out, organizations can offer live stream access to last-minute guests. This can be especially useful for workshops that might attract new participants during an event. Rather than scrambling to find an adequate space, organizations can simply live stream the workshop to interested parties!

2. Discover a New Marketing Tool

Events are one of the best ways for associations to market their services and their brand. Getting prospective members to the event, however, can offer up some unique challenges. Thankfully, with live streams, much of the heavy commitment is removed for prospective attendees. Sure, there is often a cost associated with tuning in, but it is usually a fraction of the price of attending in person. Additionally, of those who do watch the live stream, a significant number will attend the same event in person the following year! This fact makes live streams a powerful promotional tool to grow events.

After the live aspect of these streams is gone, the video content can be reused in various ways for advertisements and marketing clips. On social media, video content is marketing gold, as 48% of consumers share brand videos on their social media channels. With so much video content gleaned from a live streamed event, event planners can promote their events better and more effectively than ever!

3. Reduce Travel (and Costs!)

Perhaps the most obvious way that live streams enhance the availability and accessibility of events is by reducing the amount of travel–and travel expenses–required for attendance. It’s largely because of these conveniences that some people fear that live streams may cut into in-person attendance numbers. And, while research indicates that live streams may actually increase in-person attendance for events, digital availability is, admittedly, a highly attractive option.

Yet, no matter how much they may want to attend, people can miss out on events for any number of reasons. They may not have the money to register. The event may be too far away. They may be sick. They may not be able to get the time off work. They may have other commitments. Live streams may not be able to solve all of these issues, but they certainly provide more options. Aspiring attendees can watch from work or from home, and some live streams even allow for video replay, which removes time constraints as well! Live streams don’t remove in-person attendance; they make events accessible to those who wouldn’t be able to come in the first place!

4. Reach All Kinds

Your event could offer the most useful and beneficial content ever put together, and there would still be a large group of people who would rather not attend. Whether due to social anxiety or do-it-yourself attitudes, in-person events just aren’t attractive to some people. Regardless of why, live streams may offer an enticing alternative. People with physical limitations, for example, can access online events more easily. Introverts can attend without having to drain their social batteries.

For many, the greatest element of an in-person event is the powerful networking potential it offers. Yet, event networking has been dominated by a very specific type of person for a long period of time. Various groups and types of people who don’t fit this mold have been pushed to the sidelines, unable to participate. For these people, live streams provide a refreshingly alternative and more welcoming space.

5. Increase the Scope and Engagement

With the understanding that live streams actually improve attendance numbers–both online and in-person for future events–event planners can grow their events in a variety of ways. In addition to increasing the actual size of events and growing revenue, live streams can lead to extended presentations and workshops. Since engagement with live streams is longer, lengthy videos shouldn’t lead to a decrease in online attendance. With more viewers, event planners can also look to grow the scope and variety of topics discussed at their events.

According to some data, users are more interactive and engaged with live streams than they are with recorded videos. This gives event planners another element to consider when designing their event, as forums and various other outlets for discussion can be incorporated. Many live streamed events even allow viewers to speak with presenters, event exhibitors, and administrators while the event is ongoing. This helps enhance the presence, personality, and availability of an organization in the eyes of consumers–making your event both delightfully engaging and memorable!

Conclusion

When it comes to events, live streaming is the way to go; you can bypass attendance caps, find new methods of marketing, minimize travel and costs, expand your audience, and increase your event’s engagement. Give it a try next time your association runs an event–you’ll find yourself pleasantly surprised!

Welcome to our journey through the evolution of continuing legal education (CLE)!

In this blog post–based on the exciting presentation that Vocalmeet’s own Dr. Laurelle Jno Baptiste gave at ACLEA’s 60th Mid-Year Meeting–we’ll be taking a look at the not-so-distant history, current trends, and future possibilities of association CLE.

As association leaders, you’re likely well aware of the vital role that staying ahead plays in the ever-evolving legal field–in which CLE serves as everyone’s trusty guide!

So, let’s fasten our seat belts and get ready to explore the past, present, and future of CLE!

The Past: Geography and Scheduling and Bonus Costs, Oh My!

Once upon a time–but not that long ago!–legal professionals found themselves in a largely lecture and theory-based atmosphere. They were limited in their interaction opportunities and faced geographic, financial, and scheduling barriers that often left them missing out.

But, fear not; things were about to change!

Operations, programming, marketing, and website presence have undergone massive transformations, each playing a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of member-based organizations. Today, we’ll be looking at the evolution of each. Let’s start with the past:

Operations: Administrative staff were tasked with tracking and recording credits, renewals, and course registrations manually, requiring massive amounts of time and effort.

Programming: Prior to the virtual shift of 2020, many CLE programs were held in-person, limiting accessibility for those with geographic, physical, or financial restrictions.

Marketing: In 2009, direct mail was considered most effective by 46% of those surveyed; in 2018, marketing emails and in-person promotion were considered most effective. (Wasserman et al., 2018)

Website Presence: In Marketing General’s 2018 Membership Marketing Benchmarking Report, several of the surveyed associations mentioned their website as being a concern. (Wasserman et al., 2018)

Now, this isn’t to say that the years before 2020 were the dark ages–certainly not! eLearning is not new, and lecture-based continuing education continues even now.

There is a synergy that exists when combining the “old” (or at least, older) ways with the new; consider, for example, webinars. These combine traditional lecture-style presentations with the increased scope of an online audience. Same basic principle, much higher yield!

The Present: Embracing Technology for Enhanced eLearning

Fast forward to today, and CLE is moving to overcome traditional challenges. Communication and collaboration have only increased through the use of online tools, expanding accessibility with on-demand and hybrid courses.

Let’s now take a look at exactly what kind of online tools are being used:

Digital Platforms

Traditional event venues are evolving into digital spaces (or else combining with them!), offering flexibility through online on-demand and/or live streamed lectures. These can be hosted on online learning platforms, which offer members a whole host of resources: event registration, forums, resources, and–once an event is over–even recorded, on-demand versions of that very session!

E-Learning and Webinars

Remote, asynchronous learning is on the rise, allowing professionals to tailor education to their schedules. No more travel or scheduling conflicts; members can learn what they want, when they want, where they want!

Collaborative Platforms

Technology fosters collaboration through communication tools and platforms, enabling efficient teamwork in geographically dispersed settings. Consider, for example, how we no longer need to be in the same room to collaborate; this means something like a mentorship program can match mentors and mentees together, regardless of location, and let them share their skills.

This increased technological integration in the present ensures that associations are well-equipped to help members navigate the complexities of the contemporary legal landscape. The industry may change quickly, but with the right technology, it’s a breeze to keep up!

And what of our four favourite factors (operations, programming, marketing, and website presence)? Let’s take a look at what the present holds!

Operations: Cloud-based Association Management Systems (AMS) can have a considerable impact on the organizational effectiveness of today’s organizations, as they can increase operational efficiency while also reducing administrative costs and burdens.

Programming: Fueled by the pandemic, the eLearning industry saw record growth in 2020; it’s expected to reach $465 billion by 2028. This highlights a growing demand for flexible, accessible CLE options. (Holst, 2023)

Marketing: Hubspot notes that in 2023, segmented emails drive 30% more opens and 50% more click-throughs than unsegmented ones. (Kirsch, 2022)

Website Presence: Mobile users are projected to increase from 6.95 billion in 2020 to 7.49 billion in 2025. (Taylor, 2023) This indicates the importance of ensuring your association’s website–and CLE!–is mobile accessible and responsive.

One can only ask: what does the future hold?

The Future: AI-Enabled Efficiency

Let’s now gaze into our crystal balls and take a moment to explore the thrilling possibilities that CLE is predicted to meet.

AI simulations will transport us into practical real-world scenarios that provide immersive experiences that enhance practical knowledge and provide a controlled environment for refining skills. Members will be able to use tools like Zoom and the Metaverse to hold mock trials to gain valuable, more hands-on experience than presentations alone.

AI algorithms will also allow associations to create personalized education paths for individual members based on their behaviour on the platform. Consider the YouTube algorithm: it pays attention to the kinds of videos you show interest in, then recommends things it thinks you will like based on this data (and that data of other users with similar interests). Tailored paths will work in a similar vein.

And what of our friends, operations, programming, marketing, and website presence? We expect they will likely be characterized as follows:

Operations: By 2028, generative AI will reshape customer service and support. (Gartner, 2023) This will allow associations to transfer the burden of FAQs and common support to AI representatives.

Programming: The virtual reality education market is expected to grow from 11.8 billion in 2023 to 61.55 billion in 2028, affecting all levels of education. (The Business Research Company, 2023)

Marketing: The Metaverse is projected to reach 1 billion users by 2030 (Futureiot Editors, 2023), presenting exciting opportunities for associations to host virtual events, build communities, and personalize member experiences.

Website Presence: Learning Management Platforms will increasingly use AI to track user behavior and recommend personalized learning paths for members, as well as promote content suited to their interests.

Overall, our vision of the future emphasizes advanced technologies, a data-centric approach, and a focus on delivering personalized and immersive experiences.

What Do I Do Now?

While adapting to change can be scary, there are three simple things you can do to ensure that your association–and its members–thrive.

Focus on Staff Training: We only fear technology when we don’t know it. The best way to ready an association for the future is to ensure staff is consistently trained and up-to-date with what’s out there.

Boost Your Cybersecurity: This goes hand-in-hand with staff training; after all, you want your staff prepared for the types of attacks (e.g. phishing or ransomware) that could happen. Changing technology means new threats–but don’t worry! Arm yourself with knowledge (and some security audits!) and you’ll be in a better position to stay safe and secure.

Ethical Considerations: One of the scariest things about AI is the idea that it’s going to replace us. This notion plagues every industry, and legal is no exception! In reality, however, AI is just a tool. The help or harm comes from how it’s used. AI should be used to enhance, not replace–so make sure to ally your association with organizations who understand this important distinction.

When it comes down to it, the evolution of CLE is one born of the desire to make members’ lives better. The shift from more lecture-based learning to technology-enabled sessions increases collaboration and flexibility, while AI of the near future promises tailored learning paths for every member. Remember: the more intuitive, accessible, and cost-efficient the CLE, the wider the audience it’ll gain!

So, here’s to the evolution of CLE in the ever-changing world of law. May your association’s adventure be ever filled with continuous learning, growth, and success!

As association leaders, your primary goal is to create an environment that fosters learning, growth, and engagement.

In the digital age, one of the most effective ways to achieve this is through your online learning platform. But how do you ensure that your courses and resources reach as many members as possible? The key lies in increasing your association’s visibility through strategic advertising and marketing campaigns.

In this article, we’ll explore practical ways to enhance your association’s presence and attract both new and existing members to your online learning offerings.

Creative Campaigns to Boost Engagement

1. Continuing Education (CE) of the Month/Speaker of the Month Campaigns

This one’s simple: feature a specific course, speaker, or topic each month.

If your association already observes themed months or weeks, align some of your on-demand courses with those themes. This not only increases awareness but also helps in reducing choice paralysis for your members.

For example, if a certain credit type is particularly sought-after or challenging to obtain, spotlight courses that cater to that need. Themes aren’t just naturally engaging–they can help you fill out important CE niches in the industry!

2. Last Chance to Buy Campaign

Another good strategy is to create a sense of urgency for courses that are expiring soon.

Informing members that certain courses won’t be available for much longer encourages quick decision-making, especially for those who have been contemplating enrollment.

3. New Course Launch Campaign

Ensure your members are always in the loop when it comes to your newest courses. Templates provided by platforms like Vocalmeet are especially useful for announcing new courses across your association’s various channels.

These announcements can also work in tandem with “Last Chance to Buy” campaigns, highlighting CE on both ends of the availability spectrum.

Enhancing General Visibility

1. Email Signatures

A simple yet effective tactic is to include links or information about your online learning platform in staff email signatures. This constant, subtle reminder can drive traffic to your courses.

2. Website Optimization

Your association’s website is a powerful tool for promoting your educational offerings. A good way to ensure success is to pick a platform that makes your courses prominent, accessible, and user-friendly.

Feature your learning platform on your homepage, use clickable banners, and regularly update your site with information about new courses and ongoing campaigns.

3. Newsletters

Dedicate a section of your weekly or monthly newsletter to your continuing education. Keep the content fresh and engaging to maintain interest. You can also use this space to mix up your promotional strategies, highlighting different courses, speakers, or special offers.

4. In-Person Events

Don’t miss the opportunity to promote your online learning during live events. Mention it during meet-and-greets, conferences, or workshops. If you’re recording an event to add to your platform, let attendees know. This doesn’t detract from live participation, but it does provide an option for those who can’t attend in person!

You may also like: Becoming the Go-to Continuing Education Resource for Your Members

Conclusion

For association leaders, increasing the visibility of your online CE is crucial for engaging your members and providing valuable educational resources. By implementing creative campaigns, optimizing your digital and physical touchpoints, and regularly refreshing your promotional content, you can significantly enhance your association’s presence (and value!) in your members’ professional lives.

Remember, it’s not just about offering great courses–it’s about making sure your members know about them!
